Cherry Blossoms in Kyoto: Top 10 Spots

Cherry blossom season in Kyoto begins from late March to early April (refer to 2021 Cherry Blossom Forecast Japan for cherry blossom season in other cities in Japan). Below are Top 10 spots to enjoy cherry blossoms in Kyoto.

1st Place: Yodo River Park Sewaritei District 淀川公園 (Kyoto)

Take a walk at the 1.4KM long cherry blossom path. You can also enjoy the view from the Sakura-deai Kan (桜出会い館)  from the observation tower.

2nd Place: Omuro sakura at Ninnaji Temple 仁和寺の御室桜 (Kyoto)

The cherry blossoms here are the ones bloom the last in Kyoto. The height of the trees are only around 2 to 3m. Although the trees are not tall, they are beautiful. This spot has been a popular spot since the Edo period.

4th Place: Maruyama Park 円山公園

7th Place: Tetsugaku no Michi (Philosophy Road) 哲学の道

The name “Philosophy Road” came from the fact that the philosophers took a walk here. The 2km long cherry blossom tunnel when it is in full bloom is truely impressive.

8th Place: Nijo Castle 二条城

Nijo Castle is registered as a World Heritage Site. The Ninomaru Palace is designated as a national treasure whereas the Ninomaru Garden is designated as a special scenic spot. Nijo Castle Cherry Blossom Festival 2020 is held annually. At night, the Karamon Gate and cherry blossoms, are lit up for the visitors to enjoy the splendid time in the castle.

9th Place: Haradani-en 原谷苑

There are so many weeping cherry blossoms in Haradani-en till the extent that it can be described as the flood of cherry blossoms. Apart from cherry blossom season, the park is also opened to public during plum blossom season and autumn leaves season.

10th Place: Keage Incline 蹴上インクライン

Lake Biwa Canal is a waterway constructed during Meiji Period to transport water, freight, and passengers from to the nearby city of Kyoto. The use of Lake Biwa Canal was abolished but the route still remains. Along the boat route, there are rows of cherry blossom trees, you can enjoy the cruise while watching the cherry blossoms along the way.
